About this image format converter
This tool changes an image from one format to another: PNG, JPEG, WebP, or AVIF. It does the work in your browser using the same canvas engine that renders web pages, so the file never leaves your device. Drop an image in, pick the output format, and download the result.
Picking the right output
The format decides the trade-off between quality, file size, and transparency.
- PNG is lossless and keeps transparency. Use it for logos, icons, screenshots, and anything with sharp edges or a transparent background. It is the largest of the four.
- JPEG is lossy and has no transparency. It is the right choice for photographs, where its compression is nearly invisible and the files are small. Converting a transparent PNG to JPEG fills the transparent areas with white, which this tool does on purpose so they do not turn black.
- WebP usually beats both. It supports transparency like PNG and compresses photos smaller than JPEG, and every current browser displays it. For most web images, WebP is the best default.
- AVIF compresses even smaller than WebP at the same quality, but browser support for creating AVIF files is still uneven. If your browser cannot encode it, the tool tells you so you can fall back to WebP.
Quality vs lossless
For the lossy formats (JPEG, WebP, AVIF), the quality slider controls how much detail is kept. Higher quality means a bigger file. Around 80 to 85 percent is usually the sweet spot where the image still looks clean but the size drops a lot. PNG ignores the slider because it never throws away detail.
One thing worth remembering: converting from a lossy format back to a lossless one does not restore lost detail. Turning a JPEG into a PNG gives you a bigger file of the same slightly-degraded image, not a sharper one. Convert from the highest-quality original you have.
Our web image format guide compares PNG, JPEG, WebP, and AVIF by use case. After converting, use the image compressor if you also need to reduce the dimensions or file size.
