JSON Formatter

Prettify, validate, and minify JSON.

Runs 100% in your browser — nothing is uploaded.

About this JSON formatter

JSON is the language of APIs, config files, and data exports. It’s also famously unforgiving. One trailing comma, one missing quote, one stray comment, and the whole document breaks.

This tool prettifies, minifies, and validates JSON instantly, entirely in your browser. Your data gets parsed locally with the browser’s own JSON.parse and never leaves your machine. That matters when the payload you’re debugging contains tokens, emails, or customer records.

Format re-indents the document so nested structure becomes readable, with 2 spaces, 4 spaces, or tabs to match your project. Minify does the opposite and strips all whitespace into a single line. That’s what you want for production payloads, environment variables, or JSON embedded inside another string.

How do you read the error messages?

When validation fails, the message points at the position where the parser gave up. The usual suspects, roughly in order: a trailing comma after the last item, single quotes instead of double quotes, unquoted keys ({name: "x"} is JavaScript, not JSON), comments, and values like undefined or NaN that JSON simply doesn’t have.

Fix the first reported error and validate again. Later errors are often just fallout from the first one.

Which habits make JSON less painful?

Keep a formatted copy while you develop, and minify only at the boundary where size actually matters. If a document stays hard to scan even after formatting, the structure needs work, not the formatting.

And watch out for JSON pasted from chat apps or word processors. Smart quotes look identical to real quotes, and they fail parsing every single time.
