How Many Words Are on a Page? A Complete Words-to-Pages Guide

A typed page holds about 500 words single spaced and about 250 words double spaced, using a standard 12-point font, one-inch margins, and Letter or A4 paper. That is the fast answer most people need. But the real number swings a lot depending on your font, spacing, and margins, so here is exactly what changes it and how to count your own document in seconds.

What decides how many words fit on a page

Four things set the number: font, font size, line spacing, and margins. Change any one and the count moves.

Font is the biggest surprise. Times New Roman packs more words onto a line than Arial or Verdana at the same point size, because the letters are narrower. Calibri sits in the middle. So two documents at “12pt” can differ by 15 to 20 percent per page just from the typeface.

Font size scales almost linearly. Going from 12pt to 11pt adds roughly one line every few lines, which is why shrinking to 11pt is a common trick to fit a report on fewer pages. Line spacing is the other lever: single spacing fits about twice the text of double spacing on the same sheet.

Margins matter more than people expect. The default one-inch margin on every side is the standard for essays and manuscripts. Widen margins to 1.5 inches and you lose a chunk of every line. Paper size plays a small role too. A4 is slightly taller than US Letter, so it holds a line or two more per page.

Words per page single spaced vs double spaced

Single spaced, a standard page runs about 500 words. Double spaced, the same page holds about 250 words. Here is the useful part: double spacing does not change how many words are in a line, only how much vertical space each line takes, so it roughly halves the words that fit vertically.

That is why teachers and editors ask for double spacing. It leaves room for handwritten notes between lines, and it makes page counts predictable. A “five-page double-spaced essay” is understood almost everywhere to mean around 1,250 words.

If you use 1.5 line spacing, split the difference. Expect about 333 to 375 words per page, closer to 350 in practice with a 12pt serif font.

How many words per page for common fonts

Font choice moves the number more than most writers realize. These are typical figures at 12pt, one-inch margins, single spaced. Halve them for double spaced.

  • Times New Roman: about 500 words per page single, 250 double. It is narrow, so it fits the most text of the three.
  • Arial: about 470 words per page single, 235 double. Wider letters mean slightly fewer words per line.
  • Calibri: about 480 to 500 words per page single, 240 to 250 double. Calibri is a touch condensed for a sans-serif, so it lands near Times New Roman.

Georgia, Verdana, and Courier all run lower. Courier is a monospace font where every character takes the same width, so a Courier page holds only about 250 words single spaced. Screenwriters rely on that fixed count: one page of Courier script equals roughly one minute of screen time.

How many words is a page double spaced

A double-spaced page is about 250 words in a standard 12pt font. In Times New Roman you might see 260, in Arial closer to 235, but 250 is the number to plan around. When someone assigns “three double-spaced pages,” they mean about 750 words, and that is how most graders read it.

How many pages is 250 words

250 words is half a page single spaced and one full page double spaced, in a standard 12pt font with one-inch margins. That makes 250 words a handy mental unit: one double-spaced page equals roughly one short answer, one blog intro, or one dense paragraph block.

Handwritten pages vs typed pages

Handwriting throws the estimate off, because it depends on your writing size and the ruling of the paper. A wide-ruled notebook page holds fewer words than college-ruled.

As a rough guide, an average handwritten page on college-ruled paper holds about 100 to 150 words. Neat, small handwriting can reach 200. So a handwritten page runs closer to a double-spaced typed page than a single-spaced one, often less.

If a teacher assigns “two handwritten pages,” they are usually expecting 200 to 300 words, not the 1,000 you would get from two typed single-spaced pages. When in doubt, ask for a word count instead of a page count.

When word count matters more than page count

For anything that gets submitted or judged, word count is the real currency. Page count is a proxy that breaks the moment fonts or margins change.

College application essays cap by words, not pages: the Common App personal statement is 650 words, full stop. Academic journals list word limits (often 3,000 to 8,000). Freelance writing is paid per word. In all of these, “how many pages” is the wrong question, and padding margins to hit a page target is obvious to anyone reading.

Reading and speaking targets follow word count too. If you are timing a speech or a video script, the length depends on words and pace, not pages. A rough figure is 130 to 150 words per minute of speaking, which you can plan around using speaking time words per minute. For reading, the same document takes a different amount of time depending on the reader, which comes down to average reading speed, not how many pages it prints to.

Word count also feeds readability. A short piece with long, dense sentences can be harder to read than a longer piece of plain sentences, which is what a flesch reading ease score measures. And when you are writing for tight-limit platforms, characters matter more than either words or pages, like the twitter character limit.

How to check your own word and page count fast

Do not trust an estimate for anything that gets graded or submitted. Check the real number.

In Microsoft Word, the live word count sits in the status bar at the bottom left, or press Ctrl+Shift+G. In Google Docs, open Tools, then Word count, or press Ctrl+Shift+C to see it as you type. Both show characters too, which helps for platform limits.

For a quick check on any text, from a pasted draft to a chunk of copy, paste it into our word counter. It counts words, characters, and sentences instantly and estimates reading time, so you can see whether your 1,200-word draft actually clears the target before you format it into pages. It also flags long sentences, which ties into readability if you want to count syllables per word for a Flesch score.

FAQ

How many words are on a page? About 500 words single spaced and 250 words double spaced, in a standard 12pt font with one-inch margins. Font and margins can move that by 15 to 20 percent.

How many words is a page double spaced? Roughly 250 words, in a 12pt font like Times New Roman or Arial. So a five-page double-spaced essay is about 1,250 words.

How many pages is 250 words? Half a page single spaced, or one full page double spaced, using standard 12pt formatting and one-inch margins.

Does font really change words per page? Yes. Times New Roman fits the most text because its letters are narrow, Arial fits a bit less, and monospace fonts like Courier fit far fewer, around 250 words single spaced. Same point size, different counts.
